Connu sous le nom de « Blacksnakes », le 163rd FS avait exploité le F-16C/D Block 25 de 1991 à 2006 et le F-16C/D Block 30 de 2006 à 2010, lorsque l'unité est passée à l'A-10C Thunderbolt II. Le retour de l'escadron aux F-16C/D a été déclenché par la loi sur l'autorisation de la défense nationale (NDAA) pour l'année fiscale 2023 (FY23), qui a autorisé la demande de l'USAF de retirer les 21 A-10C de l'unité basée dans l'Indiana.
Special decoration applied to General Dynamics F-16C Block 40C of the 122nd Fighter Wing (122 FW) - 163rd Fighter Squadron (163 FS) "Blacksnakes" of US Air National Guard (USANG) of the Indiana Air National Guard (IN ANG) based to Fort Wayne Air National Guard Base with a special marking to celebrate the return of the F-16 following the retirement of the Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II. Known as the ‘Blacksnakes’, the 163rd FS had operated the F-16C/D Block 25 from 1991 to 2006 and the F-16C/D Block 30 from 2006 to 2010, when the unit transitioned to the A-10C Thunderbolt II. The squadron’s return to the F-16C/D was set in motion by the Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that authorised the USAF’s request to retire the Indiana-based unit’s 21 A-10Cs.
