In November 1944, the squadron was transferred to the 509th Composite Group on Boeing B-29 Superfortresses and began training for nuclear weapon drops. In May 1945, it was deployed to the Marianas Islands, where it became the only unit to use nuclear weapons in combat, when its aircraft dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and August 9, 1945. After V-J Day, the squadron returned to the U.S. and was stationed at Army Air Field in Roswell, New Mexico.

Kingsley, pilote héros de la WWII. La dérive verticale du nouveau avion amiral de la 173e Escadre de chasse porte une image du lieutenant David R. Kingsley, qui a reçu à titre posthume la Médaille d'honneur pour héroïsme pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Kingsley, who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for heroism during World War II. Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls, Ore., was named after the Oregon native in 1957, and the paint scheme on this aircraft pays homage to his memory. Some of the other design aspects included using B-17 bomber black and white invasion stripes, the P-51 style star and bars, Army Air Corps Bombardier Wings, and David Kingsley’s signature. In this F-15C, USAF Capt. Cesar “Rico” Rodriguez achieved two aerial victories against Iraqi MiGs during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, flying with the 58 TFS/33 TFW. Rodriguez later shot down another MiG-29 during Operation Allied Force in 1999, while flying a different F-15C. This makes him one of only four Americans since 1972 to score three aerial victories, the closest that any American pilot has come to achieving “ace” status since the Vietnam War.
